Huawei is committed to “building a fully connected intelligent world.” Behind this ambitious vision lies countless rigorous and groundbreaking scientific experiments. Located in the Zhaoxiang Campus of the Yangtze River Delta Oasis Zhigu, this project invited anySCALE to create a public dining hall accommodating 500 people simultaneously for this innovation hub. We envisioned it as a “culinary laboratory” — an innovative community where employees can recharge, exchange ideas, and spark inspiration.
The core inspiration of the design comes from “the state of ingredients after being cut open.” Just as scientific experiments reveal essence through deconstruction and observation, the textures, layers, and structures exposed in ingredient cross-sections became the central language of the space. This process of exploring “from surface to core” serves as a visual interpretation of Huawei’s research spirit. The design uses the original architectural framework as a “rational shell,” preserving and emphasizing exposed industrial ceilings and cool-toned foundations. In contrast, the interior unfolds like a sliced fruit, layered with rich materials and colors to create a warm and vibrant spatial experience that breaks away from the monotony of conventional office environments.
To accurately express the atmosphere of an “experimental field,” the material palette seeks a dynamic balance between technological precision and natural vitality. Low-saturation metallic finishes and off-white tones establish a laboratory-like sense of order, while green, orange, and blue are inspired by the natural colors of plant tissues, injecting vivid energy into the space. Silver stainless-steel film, metal mesh ceilings, oversized cutlery silhouettes, wood-grain tiles, and grey-white flooring together create a highly expressive experimental atmosphere.
In terms of spatial planning, we abandoned the rigid linear arrangement typical of traditional cafeterias and instead adopted modular furniture compositions to create an open and fluid environment, ensuring smooth circulation during food pickup and tray return. Similar to collaborative workstations in a laboratory, the space features shared long tables, independent bar counters, and semi-enclosed booths.
What anySCALE created is not merely an energy hub for Huawei employees, but also a sensory experiment in future lifestyles, transforming every meal into a beautiful exploration of aesthetics and innovation.
