anySCALE recently completed renovations for the Shanghai flagship showroom for the MATSU group, a client since 2007. The showroom displays MATSU’s innovative furniture that represents the future of design for working spaces. Moving away from the traditional and restrictive, the reforms aim at balancing flexible shared environments with private spaces.
The central challenge was to break free of the spatial limitations imposed by the many pillars and excessive partitioning. To produce an illusion of an airy, generous space, we wrapped semi-transparent polycarbonate around each wall and niche, lending a fluid and mysterious aesthetic to the area.
A unique aspect of the space is the utilisation of the outdoor space as a communal spot for visitors and passersby to enjoy MATSU’s outdoor furniture. The other highlight is the lighting imported from Europe- creations of up-and-coming designers, never seen before in China. A pop-art inspired rug with the word “Bang!” greets visitors at the entry, and signals that the future has indeed arrived.
