anySCALE took our team out to the Brickyard Retreat at the foot of the Mutianyu Great Wall in early Summer 2015. This trip was a great way for everyone to spend a relaxing weekend in the mountainous outskirts of Beijing, enjoying the surroundings of the Great Wall. As a design company we also encourage our designers to experience beautiful spaces and appreciate good design and craftsmanship. It was a good opportunity to take note of the restoration work done in this former glazed tile factory which dated back to the 1960s.
The Brickyard Retreat is a boutique hotel located near the Mutianyu sections of the Great Wall created by American-Chinese couple Jim Spear and Liang Tang. The space is well renovated with both Chinese and Western designs and promotes sustainable tourism.
The Mutianyu outing brought the anySCALE family even closer!
A variety of group activities were arranged. There were authentic Beijing noodles for lunch; barbecue dinner with a live band; a visit to the Schoolhouse, Jim and Liang’s other project. Yet the most noteworthy part has to be our team hike up to the Mutianyu Great Wall! Twenty people including our kids reached the peak of the Great Wall after a three hour hike. We also interviewed Jim Spear and invited him to our Speakers Series to share his story about the Brickyard.
